Looking for a day to celebrate the non-romantic relationships in your life with those you love the most? In 2010, Leslie Knope, a fictional character from TV show Parks and Recreation, coined Galentine’s Day. This faux holiday occurs on Feb. 13 and is a day dedicated to celebrating female friendship.
Traditionally, Galentine’s Day is celebrated over brunch, which is the best way to start any holiday. The VanCougar has recommendations for hosting the perfect pajama-styled event to spread love to all your lady friends. Of course, all recommendations can be tweaked if you would prefer to celebrate with your bros instead.
Waffle/Pancake Bar
As Leslie Knope said, “We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work. Doesn’t matter, but work is third.”
Serving up fluffy Belgian waffles is a great way to start the day off right, complete with a toppings bar of your choice. I recommend adding fruits, such as strawberries, bananas and berries with spreads like Nutella or chocolate sauce. However, if you prefer pancakes over waffles, replace with heart-shaped pancakes and toppings of your choice to show appreciation for your gal pals.
Mimosas
Nothing completes brunch like a fruity mimosa. You can’t go wrong with the classic mimosa; a combination of champagne and orange juice. However, if you want a zesty twist on the classic drink, grapefruit mimosas are the perfect alternative. Mix in rosé and grapefruit juice for a more refreshing option. If you want to be the “hostess with the most-est”, make ice cubes out of grapefruit juice and sliced fruit to chill your drink without watering it down.
Scones
This British baked good is the perfect addition for Galentine’s Day brunch. Some fan-favorite flavors are lemon poppy seed, strawberry and blueberry. An essential part of giving this snack a boost of flavor is spreading lemon curd or jam to make them extra special. Most scone mixes and spreads can be found at your local grocery store.
Whether you’re single, in a relationship or just want an excuse to get together with the awesome people in your life, these tasty foods will kickstart a Galentine’s Day worth celebrating.
