WSUV Students React to ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

On January 7, Renee Nicole Good, a U.S citizen, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

WSUV student Reagan Palmer found the incident “outrageous but not surprising.”

“I think there has been a continuous trend towards more authoritarianism and more, you know, using force when it’s not necessary,” Palmer said. “The president is saying that the ICE officer was injured and that’s simply not true. You have J.D Vance saying that this officer will have immunity and that’s absolutely not okay.”

On January 8th, Vice President J.D Vance claimed during a White House briefing that Renee Nicole Good was trying to run over the ICE agent while driving, while questioning the legality where a “local official can actually prosecute a federal official with absolute immunity . . .”

Another WSUV student, Stevi Green, disapproved of granting an officer total immunity.

“I think what the scariest part of the whole thing is, that it’s emboldened a lot of, not just ICE agents and officers, but people who feel that if these people in power are doing it, then so can I,” Green said.

Another WSUV Student, Nathan, said he felt confused by the “mixed messages” being shared about what happened, saying it is not as “black and white” as many say it is, and that he is concerned about a potential response to the incident.

“It may sound weird to say, but I guess people [are] really overreacting,” Nathan said in reference to riots.

Jonathan Anderson, another WSUV student, expressed condolences for Renee Nicole Good, and hoped for change.

“. . . may she rest in peace. I hope that there’s some justice, something changes. You know, like a wake-up call or something,” Anderson said.
